What goes with Grenadine?

Orange juice is its best friend. Grenadine sinks through it to give you the sunrise look, as in the Tequila Sunrise, and it adds a little tart fruit. Rum and lime is the other winner, as in the Bacardi Cocktail. For a no-alcohol option, add a splash to ginger ale or lemon-lime soda for a Shirley Temple.

What does it taste like?

Real grenadine is tart, fruity and sweet. Cheap bottles mostly taste of sugar and the color red.

Which bottle should I buy?

Rose's, the usual US supermarket bottle, lists corn syrup, flavoring and dye rather than pomegranate juice, so look for one with pomegranate juice first, such as Liber & Co or Small Hand Foods.

Goes well with

A sweet red bar syrup with no alcohol, originally made from pomegranate juice, sugar and water. The name comes from grenade, the French word for pomegranate. Warm equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar until dissolved, or use raspberry syrup at a pinch.

Questions

Is grenadine alcoholic?

No. Grenadine is a non-alcoholic syrup, so it's fine in mocktails and kids' drinks.

What flavor is grenadine?

Pomegranate, not cherry. That's the traditional flavor, though many modern bottles use flavorings and very little real fruit, if any.

How do you get the sunrise effect with grenadine?

Pour it in last, slowly, and don't stir. It's heavier than juice, so it sinks to the bottom and rises in a soft red fade.

One good drink, every Friday.
