What goes with Prosecco?
Aperol and peach are the big two. Prosecco is the base of the Aperol Spritz, and peach makes a Bellini. Its light fruit gets along with other fruit and with bitter aperitifs, so try a splash of Chambord, elderflower cordial or Campari. Keep the pour of anything else small, since prosecco is delicate.
What does it taste like?
Light and fruity, with green apple, pear and soft bubbles. Even the drier ones can taste a little sweet.
Which bottle should I buy?
Mionetto, La Marca and Zonin are the usual easy-to-find bottles, and DOCG on the label marks a step up from DOC. Pick Brut for mixing, since the other ingredients bring the sugar.
Goes well with
An Italian sparkling wine from the Veneto and Friuli, made mainly from the Glera grape. It's around 11% ABV. Cava or any dry sparkling wine works, and Champagne is a fine upgrade if someone else is paying.
Questions
What can you mix with prosecco?
Aperol, peach purée and fruit liqueurs are the classics. Pour the prosecco last and stir gently so you keep the bubbles.
Is prosecco sweet?
It depends on the label. Brut is the driest of the common styles, Extra Dry is a bit sweeter, and Dry is the sweetest. Yes, really.
What is the difference between prosecco and Champagne?
Prosecco is Italian, gets its bubbles in big tanks and tastes light and fruity. Champagne is French, gets its bubbles in the bottle and tastes drier and toastier.
